1. The interior labels — the first filter
Every authentic bag from the brand features an interior label with the brand name embossed in gold or silver on leather. The text should be perfectly centered, with uniform typography and no irregularities.
Replicas often fail here: slightly distorted typography, letters that are not aligned, or ink that comes off with friction. In an original, the label is sewn or glued with millimeter precision. Additionally, on many models, you will find the brand name and "Made in Italy" text. If the bag says "Made in China" or does not specify origin, it is not authentic.
2. Hardware — where quality is evident
The hardware is heavy, with a uniform finish and no burrs. Clasps, rings, carabiners, and chains have a weight and solidity that replicas cannot imitate because using the same materials would skyrocket their production cost.
Specifically check:
- The clasp: it should open and close smoothly, without resistance or excessive looseness.
- The chain links: perfectly circular, with no visible welds.
- The engraved logo on the hardware: clear, deep, and centered. In replicas, it is often superficial and blurry.
3. The leather — touch, smell, and appearance
The lambskin nappa leather of the Matelassé model has an unmistakable softness and drape. To the touch, it is silky, warm, and slightly elastic. The smell is that of genuine leather: soft, natural, without chemicals.
Replicas use synthetic materials that imitate the visual appearance but fail in touch and especially in smell. In padded models, the padding should be uniform across the entire surface, with perfectly symmetrical diamond patterns and straight stitches with consistent tension.
4. The stitching — the most telling detail
The stitching on an authentic bag is perfect. Uniform stitches, thread color perfectly coordinated with the leather, no loose threads or skipped stitches. At corners and edges, the stitching finishes cleanly with no material accumulation.
Examine the stitching in good light. A single irregular stitch is enough reason to doubt.
5. The interior — as important as the exterior
The interior lining is made of high-quality fabric, well-tensioned, and wrinkle-free. The interior pockets are perfectly finished with zippers that operate smoothly. There should be no glue accumulation, exposed seams, or irregularities on the interior bottom.
6. The serial number and authenticity card
Many models include an authenticity card or a serial number engraved on a small interior leather tag. The card should be printed with high-quality typography, without irregular edges, and with the logo correctly centered.
7. The price — if it's too good to be true, it is
A new Matelassé bag in a boutique costs between 1,800 and 2,800 euros depending on the model and year. In the pre-loved market, a piece in good condition from a verified seller rarely goes below 400-500 euros. If you find an original for 150 euros on a general platform, the answer is almost always the same: it's not.
